OPTION #1. Human Development Clinic Experience
One option for the final project for this course is to get the experience of being “helped” and to see a
“helper” in action. The Graduate Counseling Program at MSU, which is housed in the Health and
Human Development Dept., runs a community counseling clinic, The Human Development Clinic, on S.
3
rd, just south of Grant Ave. It is a white farm house and there is a sign out front that says the “Kellogg
Center”. This is NOT the MSU Counseling Center. ***NOTE-If you are currently seeing a counselor
or psychologist, do not go to see someone at the clinic as well. Talk to Wendy if you have any questions.
For this option, you can choose to attend 4 counseling sessions, plus an initial intake interview (5
sessions total) with a graduate student at the clinic, and then write a short “Pearl” about the experience.
PLEASE SEE DESCRIPTION BELOW (pg. 4) ABOUT HOW TO CONTACT THE HUMAN
DEVELOPMENT CLINIC. YOU NEED TO CONTACT THEM BY 4:00pm on FEB. 21st
IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS OPTION.
CLINIC EXPERIENCE PEARL: By April 16th
you will need to have completed all of your
sessions and submit a 1 page, typed, double-spaced PEARL about the experience. Use the “General
Pearl Description” instructions posted on D2L for paper format, etc. Also, you MUST bring the signed
signature sheet to class on April 16th. NOTE: You will automatically lose 15 points off of this
assignment if you do not turn in the signature sheet to your professor by April 16
th
(signature form
is at the bottom of the information sheet on the Clinic—see below).
Things you need to include in the pearl:
a. How did the counselor attempt to build a relationship with you? What was
effective? What wasn’t?
b. What skills did the counselor use?
c. What was most helpful about the experience?
d. What was least helpful?
e. How will this experience help make you a better helper?
