Identify studies concluding
causation w/correlational data
Causal statement cannot be made as
a result of correlational studies. Although this is true, many causal
statements you are bombarded with every day are due to correlational studies.
Find five statements making cause
and effect claims even though they are based on data collected in correlational
studies. For example, one Web site might claim insomnia leads to depression.
After you read the support behind this statement, you might discover the study
is based on survey questions correlating the number of hours slept with
depressive feelings.
After finding the five
correlation-based statements and summarizing the methodological problems with
the causal claims, state one other variable possibly responsible for the
apparent link between two variables of interest. For example, it might be
insomniacs have progressively worse social interactions, and that may, in fact,
be the main cause of depression. Without experimental testing, this guess is as
good as any.
Submit all of your statements
along with the possible third variables.

cause and effect claims while they are based on data collected in correlational
studies.

with the causal claims of all five statements
