Human Anatomy & Physiology ITheory Case Study #2: 25 Points Case Study 2: Fibromyalgia Case Presentation L.C.I. is a 50 year-old female patient that consults her chiropractor due to generalized muscle pain, stiffness, fatigue, and sadness for the last three months. She refers that the pain is constant, sometimes very sharp and localized, others, it is dull and diffuse. She complains of an increase in pain due to tactile pressure (allodynia). She is feeling overwhelmed by this lack of health and often feels sad and lonely. She states that her stress level is “very high. Past Medical Histo PMH: L.C.I. has a long history of generalized complaints of pain. L.C.I. has been relatively healthy. She has had two vaginal deliveries at full term without complications. Except for a tons ectomy at age 3 she had had no additional surgeries. She states she is a nonsmoker and non- drug user. There is no suspicion of alcohol abuse. L.C.I. has had complaints of functional bowel disturbances and has been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. This is managed by diet changes and an occasional laxative. ChietComplaint L.C.I. is complaining of generalized muscle pain, stiffness, fatigue, and sadness for the last three months COMMENT TO THE STUDENT: One of the unique clinical manifestations of fibromyalgia is the presence of 18 possible tender points (9 pairs) in specific locations on the body. When these points are pressed, a patient with fibromyalgia will experience pain, while individuals without this disease experience only a sensation of pressure at the site. Typically, a diagnosis of fibromyalgia is made if 11 of the 18 tender points elicit pain upon palpation and the patient also experiences diffuse soft tissue pain for a duration of at least 3 months
