In a large open-pollinated corn population, 50 plants were
randomly sampled for 1,000 kernel gram weights. Calculate the mean,
sample variance and standard deviation for this population
sample.
Seeds from the following corn
plant were grown and the average 1,000 kernel gram weights were
determined. These are listed below the selected parental gram
weights.
Calculate the covariance
between selected parents and progeny. Also calculate the
coefficient of correlation (r) for the selected parents and
progeny. Narrow-sense heritability may be calculated in two ways
from this data. Use 1) the response to selection method and 2) the
slope of the regression line multiplied by two as estimates of
h2.
