Objective You will be required to: .Demonstrate that the normal force is responsible for the force of friction. . Determine the coefficient of static and kinetic friction of a substance across a table. Materials Force scales, masses, string, etc. What to Do You will need to create an experimental procedure and data tables for each part below Part 1- Normal Force Students will devise and test a method to prove that the normal force determines the force of friction. This will require a qualitative or quantatative analysis. However students chose to investigate this, the results must clearly prove the assumption. Part 2 -Static Friction Students will need to vary the amount of mass of the object and record the amount of force required to start the object sliding from a stop (static friction). Part 3- Kinetic Friction Students will need to vary the mass and record the amount of force required to keep the object moving at a constant speed (kinetic friction). Constant speed is critical. From the data, you will need to create a plot of the force read off of the spring (F) vs Fy for both kinetic and static friction. The slope of both graphs will be critical in determining required values. Reporting Complete the data collection and prepare graphs of your collected data. Prepare a graphical and descriptive analytical poster of your procedure, data and results/analysis. Grading Your report/poster will be scored out of 10 marks. The final lab assessment will be a lab quiz which will be written the day after the lab presentations. The quiz will be scored out of 10 as well. You will be required to bring your data, graphs and equations for the quiz.
