When is international trade an opportunity for workers
Approximately 42% of U.S. jobs are connected to international trade, 3 million of these jobs are manufacturing and another 3.9 million are agricultural jobs so international trade is creating more opportunities for the US worker than there would be with a closed economy. When compared to a country with a closed economy a country that supports international trade has better economic growth, employment and living standards, and opportunity for growth (Bangkoklogistics.com, 2007). International trade also protects consumers from expensive tariff tax that would be incorporated in a closed economy if goods were transported in. Demand for the product is another bonus to international trade when a product is introduced into a global market the demand will increase creating more demand and in return more jobs will be needed to support the increase in demand.
When is it a threat to workers
Outsourcing is the biggest threat to workers where international trade is done. If a company can outsource jobs to save on labor rates and produce more for less with equal quality then it becomes a threat to workers by reducing the amount of jobs locally needed to support the demand for the product. There have been many companies in the U.S. that have been taken down to a minimal workforce or close due…
