Which influential strategy do you encounter most and how do you respond?
We often see on the news or online how some business executive or any individual has used their power to cause or prevent some behavior or action. That type of power is about having control over someone’s behavior but there is another definition of power that is discussed in chapter 5 which is about being able to get things done. Being able to get things done involves being able to influence people to help you accomplish your goals. To that effect, power and influence are interrelated. The book used the example of the president who we might define as most powerful but he often has difficulty convincing congress to agree with him. He has power but his influence is limited or restricted but there are strategies to influence people to help accomplish goals which are referenced as the Three Rs: retribution, reciprocity, and reason. An influential person will be able to secure positive, supportive consent instead of resistance.
